Place: Colaba, behind The Taj Hotel.
Service: - 0/10
Ambience: - 5/10
VFM: - 2/10We went to Bade Miya's after we had a few beers at Gokul, right after we saw the Mumbai Indians v/s Deccan Chargers IPL match at Brabourne stadium. It didn't help that a whole lot of people were there to eat after the match. But I've never understood the hype around Bade Miya anyway.
Food
The food at Bade Miya is above average...that's all. Now I know that a lot of people swear by the food here. But I prefer the food at Mohammed Ali Road on Ramzaan nights and closer to home, I really like the food at Cafe Alif at Jogeshwari. There's also Lucky's food. Or just go to Hyderabad and eat at Paradise. A lot of people don't try this, but have the mutton kababs at Paradise. They are the best I've ever tried.
Anyway, we ordered for rotis along with chicken seekh kababs, chicken tikkas, tandoori chicken and bheja masala. The tandoori and bheja were outstanding, but the rest of them were below par. We took some chicken tikka rolls to go, and my roti was burnt which made the roll bitter. Not happy.
Menu variety
I wish they had more mutton kababs here. They didn't even have mutton seekh, which one of my friends wanted to have really badly.
Service
Well, it's kinda expected in a place like this - there is no service. The following was the chronology of events:
- We don't have a table so we order for parcel.
- A table gets free so we take the table.
- The parcel cannot be converted to a table order. We have to wait for a waiter and re-order.
- We wait 20 mins at the table, but nobody comes to take our order, even after repeatedly calling them.
- Finally a guy comes and takes our order, but doesn't write it down. It's a large order.
- The guy comes back after another 15 mins. He's forgotten our order.
- We re-order.
- The guy comes back after 10 mins with half our order. We have to repeat what he's forgotten.
- At the end of the meal, he's still not brought us the water we ordered for.
- He gets the bill very very quickly!
- We pay and leave.
I kinda like the ambience here. Firstly, it's a good feel of Mumbai street food. Secondly, the crowd that comes here ranges from the mundane to the extraordinary. We saw four transvestite prostitutes eating at another table. Can't tell you how proud we were feeling about Bombay being the city for one and all!
Value for money
Not great VFM here. It's an expensive place for street food. But it's located at Colaba. And the hype had made it costlier.
And in conclusion...
I know a lot of people want to try out this place because everybody talks about it so much. But I honestly don't recommend it. There are a lot more places serving better street food at cheaper rates. I'd rather have egg bhurji near Amar Juice Center any day.
i kind of feel the same way..its really over rated...
ReplyDeleteAnother joint just a few paces away serves much better keema and Naan..!!!
