Place: Near Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, 4 Bungalows, Andheri (W)
Service: - 5/10
VFM: - 6/10I was back in Bombay for another weekend and went on to burrp.com to see what new place I could try out for the blog. Saw The Jail Lounge Bar for the first time and sent an email to my friends saying we should try this place out some time. Gayatri pinged me on chat and said we could do it on the same evening...why wait! The guys were okay with any place as long as there was alcohol involved. And so we met at the new theme restaurant in town.
Food
An offer was going on - unlimited beer for Rs 550 until the IPL match was on - but only Fosters was being offered. A few of us took the offer while the others just ordered a pint of our favorites Kingfisher / Tuborg. First thing is, they don't give you anything to munch on with the beer. And you can't even order peanuts! So we ordered for some paneer, chicken and prawn starters. The paneer was really good, and the rest were good too, just not mindblowing. The main course really sucked. We ordered Italian dishes, which didn't really have any great flavors. The only thing I loved was the risotto, but that's just my bias because it was cheesy to the core and I LOVE cheese!
Menu Variety
They have a whole lot of stuff on their menu that you can try. They serve mainly continental food and there's a lot of new stuff that you can try out. The chef surely has the vision, but bad, bad implementation.
Service
Overall, people were friendly. But I think I've been spoiled by Sammy Sosa. The match had just got over a minute back and three of us had just about finished our Fosters. So we asked the staff if they could give us another round of that unlimited offer, coz the match had only just finished. We got very huffy replies in the negative. Not one out of the three people we asked even said it could be considered and he would ask somebody. It was a plain and simple "no". We missed Sammy Sosa so much. They would have said "alright!" in a jiffy!
Ambience
Sure the jail thing was fun. But only for once. I didn't find it really kick-ass or anything. It was a place you might want to visit once. No great shakes. The good part was the large screen with projector that was playing the match. I would've liked it if they had separate cells for every table though. It was just a stone-walled restaurant with bar-railed doors and staff that wore cop and prisoner outfits.
Later the next day, Kashif told me about a very disturbing concern about these uniforms worn by the staff. It is a known fact that the clothes you wear over a period of time, influence your psychological state of mind and eventually your behavior. Is it possible that somebody who works for this lounge in a cop uniform will automatically become arrogant and authoritative? Worse, is it possible that somebody in a prisoner uniform will end up being rebellious and out of hand? Of course, you could alternatively argue that even if this is true, the employees will never work for the lounge long enough for any influence to take effect. But are we willing to risk that? I googled a bit and came across a very thought provocative article on the Stanford prison experiment.
Value for Money
For food and the unlimited Fosters offer, we had to shell out Rs. 1200 each. But economies of scale were in play too. We were 5 of us and we shared all the food. Again, because I was not so impressed with the whole Jail setup and Kashif and Rajesh claimed that the music system was not good (I'm not an expert, so just stating their opinion), I honestly don't think this place has good VFM after your first visit. Every consequent visit will only bring the VFM rating lower.
Location
It is conveniently located at 4 bungalows, just two signals away from the Kokilaben hospital. And the crowd is chilled out Andheri West types (which means wear whatever you want to wear - from shorts to party dresses).
And in conclusion...
If you're curious, it's a one-time-go place. If you're not, skip it.
